Japan's fun roadster - remixed!

First launched in Japan in 1989, the Mazda MX5 is a small two-passenger sports car which has gone on to become the best-selling two-door sports car in history. It's development came from a response made in 1976 from Motor Trend journalist, Bob Hall, who said that the "simple, bugs-in-the-teeth, wind-in-the-hair, classically-British sports car doesn't exist any more" and that someone should build an inexpensive roadster.

Since launch, the Mazda MX5 has had four generations (NA, NB, NC and ND) and sold more than 1.1 million vehicles. It has won numerous awards, including Wheels Magazine's Car of the Year three times, the Car of the Year Japan award twice, and the Australian Car of the Year, just to name a few. It is highly regarded by enthusiasts and automotive reviewers as being a lightweight, inexpensive, fun car to drive and is a great choice for participating in amateur motorsport.

Rebecca developed a drawing challenge using the MX5 as a base vehicle for two reasons:

  1. The ND MX5 is a fun, playful car with both the convertible and targa top options giving it plenty of variety.
  2. Using reMX as a project name was too good to not use.

There were a total of 30 cars created for this project, with a number of themes explored such as automotive styling eras, film/TV vehicles, motorsport icons, colours and kawaii artwork. Some of the ideas for these cars were grounded in reality, for example: the luxury car (Luxurious) and the police car (Tokyo-50), whereas other ideas were completely imaginative, for example: the snowmobile (Frostbite), the boat (Goldfish), the monster truck (Sea Monster), the jet-powered car (Comets), and the bubble tea car (Boba).
